This scan is recommended for those who have leg pain/tenderness and possible swelling of the area, including those who have pain when the calf is compressed. Whilst completing the scan we carry out an overall well being check on the leg area assessing the risk of blood clots which are potentially serious.
We carefully check the area and report back our findings.
As we allow a full 20 minutes appointment this provides you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and allows us to support you and provide you with the most accurate advice during the scan.A qualified Sonographer will complete your scan. Our Sonographers are fully qualified and registered medical professionals with lots of ultrasound experience. Our Sonographers are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and follow the British Medical Ultrasound Society protocols and guidance. If, at any stage, we notice anything unusual during your scan we will explain our findings based on the visual observation at that time. We will advise you on what to do next and refer you to your GP or local hospital unit, we have the contact information and details to provide to you in the clinic. If we recommend a follow up we can email a copy of your report to your healthcare provider with your permission.
How to prepare for your DVT scan –
You do not need to do anything to prepare for your DVT scan, however wearing two piece items of clothing will be helpful. You will be asked to remove your shoes, socks and trousers/skirt/shorts. The scan will be performed with you sitting on the bed. Ultrasound gel is applied to your leg and the scan is carried out from the groin down to the ankle. The sonographer will use the ultrasound probe to press on the veins on your leg to see if there are any clots in the vein. They may also gently squeeze your calf to control the blood flow, whilst moving the probe up and down your leg to view the veins.
